Extraordinary global citizens

In practice
18 February 2025

Education is an essential factor in stimulating global citizenship. However, it is not always easy to reach teachers from special education. That’s why in 2024 - with the support of the province of West Flanders - we started Buitengewone wereldburgers (Extraordinary global citizens): a pilot project in which we want to stimulate teachers of special primary education (focus: autism spectrum) in West Flanders to get started with Global Citizenship Education.

Lesson design in Global Citizenship Education

Djapo will professionalize teachers from three special education schools in World Citizenship Education: Futura Geluwe, Mijn Oogappel (Vichte) and De Kim & De Sam (Deerlijk). Experts from VIVES Kortrijk, Leersteuncentrum Zuid-West-Vlaanderen and Katholiek Onderwijs Vlaanderen advices the project team.

In spring 2025, we will organize lesson design workshops, during which teachers will develop and test lessons on World Citizenship Education under the guidance of Djapo. In 2026, the lesson sheets and the resulting didactic framework will be published on this website.

With this English-language comic book, students from six European countries want to make other young people aware of the widespread use of single-use plastics. The project group engaged Djapo to develop two lessons so teachers can use the comic book in their lessons. The lessons are available in both Dutch and English.
