Deplastify the Planet: lessons inspired by a comic book

News
11 October 2024

In April 2024 a special comic book was presented at the Belgian high school Saint Gummarus College: Plastica's Revenge. With this English-language comic book, students from six European countries want to make other young people aware of the widespread use of single-use plastics. The project group engaged Djapo to develop two lessons so teachers can use the comic book in their lessons. The lessons are available in both Dutch and English.

Fighting against climate change

The launch of the comic book was the apotheosis of Deplastify The Planet, an Erasmus+ KA220 school cooperation project conducted by the project coordinator school Saint-Gummaruscollege and four partner schools from Spain, Portugal, Austria and Croatia. The main objective of this project: protecting the environment by reducing the use of single-use plastics. The partners created measurements on how to develop an eco-friendly school and shared and collected experiences and effective methods on how to protect the environment and reduce plastic waste.

Comic book available online for free

To reach even more young people, the project group decided to have the pupils create a comic book about the impact of plastic waste. To do so, they had the help of several professionals, including cartoonist Kristof Fagard. The comic book is now available online for free and a small print run will be distributed in each participating country. Teachers in Belgium can rent a copy of the comic book via De Studieshop.

Bring the comic book to class

Djapo developed two lessons inspired by the comic book. The lessons are still in translation, but you will find them soon on this page.
